Singapore’s Central Area: Spotlight on Newton-Novena and Outram
Singapore’s Central Area: Spotlight on Newton-Novena and Outram. This issue of EdgeProp Singapore focuses on two Central Area districts that are undergoing development: the Newton-Novena enclave and the Outram neighborhood. Being near a hospital and medical cluster that is a part of a master plan will be advantageous for both regions.
It is the HealthCity Novena, a 17 ha healthcare integrated master plan development in the Newton-Novena region. It will connect Tan Tock Seng Hospital, the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, and other public and volunteer healthcare facilities when it is finished in 2030. A holistic ecosystem that includes health services, research and education, business, recreation, and public services will be created with the help of HealthCity Novena. More housing developments may be built around the Novena HealthCity under the 2019 Master Plan.
One of Singapore’s most important current infrastructure projects is the 21.5 kilometer North-South Corridor project (NSC). The Land Transport Authority oversees the NSC, which has been referred to as Singapore’s longest Transit Priority Corridor (LTA). The LTA unveiled the Transit Priority Corridor in 2017, which combines dedicated bike lanes, wider pedestrian walkways, and bus lanes. The Central Expressway and other heavily frequented roads like Marymount Road, Thomson Road, and Newton Road are among those where the NSC seeks to reduce traffic. Beginning in 2020, tunneling activities will make it possible to construct the NSC beneath Thomson Road. Once completed, it will benefit locals in the Newton-Novena area.
The Singapore General Hospital (SGH) Campus is the key catalytic initiative in the Outram neighborhood, though. Major renovations will be made to SGH, and the new campus will span 43 ha and include connected zones for patient care, research, and education. It is part of a 20-year master development plan. With the inauguration of the third phase of the Thomson-East Coast Line, which includes the Outram MRT Interchange Station, which will be connected to three lines, Outram will also gain from improved accessibility and connection.
